A former user’s safety guide Updated for 2026

Jaxx Liberty is gone.
Your funds may not be.

The wallet was discontinued in 2023. If you still have your 12-word recovery phrase, you may be able to restore access using a trusted, actively maintained wallet—but the safest first step is knowing what not to do.

What was Jaxx Liberty?

Jaxx Liberty was a multi-currency cryptocurrency wallet developed by Decentral Inc., founded by Ethereum co-founder Anthony Di Iorio. At its peak, it supported more than 80 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dash, Zcash and ERC-20 tokens.

It was available on Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, Linux and as a Chrome extension. Its simple interface brought multiple assets together in one place, with tools for portfolio tracking and in-app exchange services through partners such as Simplex and Changelly.

◈

Many assets, one app

Manage, send and receive a broad range of digital currencies from a single wallet.

⤢

Cross-device access

Restore access on another device using the same 12-word recovery phrase.

⟳

HD wallet structure

Hierarchical deterministic keys could generate new addresses for transactions.

Why it shut down

Decentral Inc. retired Jaxx Liberty in March 2023. The company did not release a successor wallet, and the official services that connected the app to blockchain networks were shut down. An installed copy may still open, but that does not mean its services or security are functioning.

“

A wallet’s recovery phrase is what gives access to the assets—not the old app itself.

WHY RECOVERY CAN STILL BE POSSIBLE

Recovery generally means restoring the wallet in a compatible, operational wallet using the original phrase. The phrase controls access, so anyone who obtains it can control the funds. Treat it as a master key.

Spot the Jaxx recovery scams

Scammers exploit searches from former users with lookalike sites and apps that claim to restore funds. Their goal is simple: convince you to disclose your recovery phrase, then take control of the wallet.

Red flags to watch for

01

A website or “support agent” asks you to type or send your 12 words.

02

A download uses the Jaxx name, old logos, or promises an official migration tool.

03

A site pressures you to act immediately, pay a recovery fee, or share your screen.

04

Search ads or unfamiliar domains imitate wallet providers or recovery services.

Recover your funds safely

Recovery is possible in some cases using the 12-word phrase with a compatible wallet. Go carefully. If you suspect your device is compromised, stop and use a clean, trusted device instead.

01

Prepare a secure device

Use a device you trust and keep its operating system and security software current. Avoid public or shared computers. Never paste your phrase into a browser or website.

02

Choose a compatible wallet

Options reported to support Jaxx phrase imports include Exodus and Edge. MetaMask can import BIP-39 phrases for Ethereum-compatible assets. Confirm current support directly with each wallet’s official documentation before proceeding.

Wallet features can change. Verify the publisher and download only from its independently confirmed official source.
03

Restore inside the verified app

In the wallet’s restore or import flow, enter your phrase only within the genuine application. Check the app publisher and URL carefully before downloading. Balances and assets may not all appear automatically.

04

Move assets to newly generated keys

After restoring, consider transferring funds to a new wallet created with a fresh recovery phrase. The old phrase may have been exposed over time. Confirm each destination address carefully; network fees apply.

Write down the new phrase offline and store it securely. Never photograph it, email it, or keep it in cloud notes.
✓

Pause before you enter the phrase. You should be inside a wallet application you deliberately downloaded from a verified source—not a website, browser pop-up, support chat, or remote-access session.

Asset-specific considerations

Wallet derivation paths and asset support differ. A successful phrase import does not guarantee every coin or token will display automatically.

₿

Bitcoin, Litecoin & Dogecoin

Jaxx Liberty used legacy, non-SegWit address formats. If balances do not appear, check the importing wallet’s current guidance for compatible address types.

LEGACY FORMAT
Z

Zcash

Some import tools may not correctly display Zcash balances from a Jaxx phrase. Use a currently maintained Zcash-compatible wallet and verify support before importing.

CHECK SUPPORT
Ξ

Ethereum & ERC-20 tokens

Tokens may require manual display or adding a token using its verified contract address on the correct network. Confirm addresses from a trusted source.

MAY NEED SETUP

Stay safe after recovery

✓

Keep your phrase offline. A legitimate wallet will not ask for it through a website form, email, or support message.

✓

Avoid all Jaxx-branded software. The product is defunct; any current Jaxx-branded recovery offering is unauthorized.

✓

Use actively maintained wallets. Move recovered assets to a wallet receiving current security updates; consider hardware storage for significant holdings.

✓

Verify every download. Navigate to wallet developers’ official domains directly. Avoid ads, links in unsolicited messages, and sponsored search results.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING

Your recovery phrase never belongs online.

Take your time. No legitimate recovery process should require you to disclose it to another person or website.
